The modern roofline is made up of numerous products, connected to form a vital element of your roofing system. Though they are a very important part of your house, you might not know the technical terms for each part of your roofline.
So, we have put together a quick glossary of terms you might need.
- Facia (or fascia, facias, fascia board) – Long straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof, mounted at the point where the roof meets the exterior walls of the house to which the guttering is attached.
- Soffits – The board that can be seen from ground level looking up, tucked away under the facia.
- Bargeboard – This board runs along the gable end of the roofline.
- Box end (or boxend) – Exactly how it sounds, the product is used to join the facia, soffit, and bargeboard to box it off.
- Gutter – A water collection trough situated on the edge of the roof, running along the edge of the slope.
- Downspout- The gutter trough is connected to a downspout that channels the water to the ground.
- Cladding – Protective façade fitted onto the outside of the home.
Now that you are familiar with the common terms used to discuss the roofline, here are the main advantages of installing the main roofline products: facia, soffits, guttering and cladding.
Why do you need exceptional-quality roofline products?
Facia
The facia closes the gap between the walls and the roof, preventing water and animals from getting into the roof and loft space. They also support the bottom row of tiles and hold up the guttering system, keeping your home watertight even in the strongest of storms.
Soffits
Soffits can provide ventilation which allows air to flow through the roof. Without ventilation, condensation can form under the roof, which can lead to timber decay, mould, and mildew. Ventilation can also be provided over the top of the facia board.
Guttering
Your guttering system is one of the most important aspects of your roofline, because it catches water from your roof and directs it to the ground through a downspout. Not only does this stop water pooling on your roof and causing water damage, but it directs water away from your foundations, reducing the risk of any structural damage during bad weather.
Cladding
Cladding your home enhances the strength of your walls and the ability to resist against strong winds, temperature change, and rain. This is because it improves resistance to cracking, water absorption, air pollution and sunlight.
