How to make the most of your conservatory this spring

Last Updated: 12th October 2021

If you have a conservatory, it is probably already strongly associated with many positive memories from months or even years past. After all, your breath could easily be taken away as you walk into a conservatory and see a 180-degree view of your outdoor space and hear birds singing outside.

However, you might still rarely venture into your conservatory outside of the summer months. Here are some easy-to-overlook ways of making using your conservatory an enjoyable spring pursuit, too.

Treat your conservatory as a reading spot

Now that spring is here, much more sunlight is trickling into our homes than it did during the winter months – and that spells good news for our mental wellbeing. According to a survey mentioned by the Independent, 83% of women and 74% of men reported reduced daylight hampering their mood.

You shouldn’t pass up the chance to ward off Seasonal Affective Disorder and associated symptoms of depression and tiredness; why not enjoy reading a good book in your conservatory?

Make the conservatory an open-plan living space

Keeping plenty of books in your conservatory can help make it feel more homely – though possibly not as much as turning it into an open-plan living room.

Acting on an idea suggested by Ideal Home, you could arrange for wooden flooring to be fitted in the conservatory. You could also allow natural light to shine in through a glazed roof. At Vantage, we have the expertise to install such roofing for you in a North East conservatory.

Make a big impact with a big screen

What pastimes do you most often pursue in your living room? They probably include watching films with a home cinema setup – and you shouldn’t rule out the possibility of one in your conservatory.

Nonetheless, you would need to have blackout blinds fitted over that conservatory’s windows. Three respondents to a survey highlighted by Country Living did exactly that on their way to each making their conservatory a pop-up home cinema room.

Set up a home gym

Spring might put you in the mood to take your exercise regime outdoors. Still, British weather can be unpredictable – and you probably don’t need us to remind you of the inevitable frustration should you start an outdoor run, only for heavy rain to start falling and so jeopardise your efforts.

However, 6% of participants in the just-mentioned survey reported having installed a home gym in their conservatories – allowing these people to exercise in brightness but not unexpected rain.

Build an indoor swimming pool

This would obviously be a pretty ambitious way of transforming a conservatory; however, one of the survey’s respondents was actually granted the planning permission to make it a reality.

Of course, the conservatory would have to be relatively large to be capable of housing a swimming pool. However, we can offer whole conservatories as well as roofing services in Newcastle, Sunderland, Stockton-on-Tees and various other North East settlements.
