Valleys:

Valleys are one of the most vulnerable parts of the roof. They are the most trafficked by water, they expand and contract in high/low temperatures and are prone to leaking.

Traditionally, these have for years been done in lead or, in rare occasions, tiled. Lead valleys last around 50-60 years depending on the thickness, and should be checked yearly for blockages and any damage following storms.

Leadwork is the most common way to replace valleys and should be done in sections, no more than 1400mm long with overlaps to accommodate expansion and contraction.

Repairs

Temporary repairs can be conducted to valleys using flash band and liquid sealants like Acrypol and Bitumen. They are, however, only very temporary – and, if cracks and leaks in valleys appear, this is often the sign to have them replaced.

Vantage’s offers lead valley replacement using 18” Code 5 leadwork.

Valley refurbishment

Valleys can be refurbished and repointed using specialist putty. This can stop water penetration, birds/wasps nests forming under the valley. It’s important to ensure valleys are maintained on a annual basis.

Dry valleys

If the entire roof is being replaced, you may be able to choose a new dry fix valley. These originated in the early 2000s and have become greatly popular on all new builds owing to their durability and long-lasting GRP qualities.

Ask your Vantage’s estimator about whether dry valleys could be used on your new roof project.
