How to decide on the right fencing for your garden

Last Updated: 9th March 2023

On one level, fencing can serve merely practical purposes; to list some examples, it can increase the privacy of your outdoor space, make it less draughty or secure your pool or whatever else you have in the garden. However, chosen well, fencing can also leave a pleasing aesthetic touch.

The real trick is to carefully balance your practical and aesthetic concerns, resulting in a fencing solution that ticks all of the right boxes. Here are a few major concerns to consider…

Are you worried about the cost?

In that case, you might not be overly concerned about choosing a “traditional favourite” largely indistinguishable from what already protects neighbouring gardens. Therefore, you might be happy with the most oft-used garden fence panel, what Which? calls the standard “waney edge” panel.

Panels of this type consist of horizontal wooden strips and represent the best value for money, according to the watchdog organisation. At Vantage’s, we call this type the “overlap” option, as the delicate sheets of wood overlap while secured by strong vertical posts.

Would you like more privacy?

If so, opt for fencing with as little space between its boards as possible. You could find that, even if these gaps aren’t entirely closed, this fencing – when decorated with lush, climbing plants – could conceal your garden nearly as effectively as a solid material, as Forbes observes.

As for the fencing’s height – well, this very much depends on the exact amount of privacy you crave. However, other factors will include the slope of your garden and your neighbour’s, as well as where seating will be placed in your space.

Do you want to block an unsightly view?

Perhaps a busy street runs behind your garden, leaving you with a view far from reminiscent of a quiet, rural oasis. All the same, though, trying too hard to block out that view with your fencing could prevent sunlight trickling through, seeing you cutting off your nose to spite your face.

You could find that a lattice-like design provides just the right solution. Consider the “arched” style of fencing available from our contractors. While the main pattern is undulating, each panel is topped with a lattice pattern that looks great in itself.

The curve of this design can also work well if you especially prioritise a “showstopper” fence that turns heads for all the right reasons. People could certainly be drawn to that fencing more easily than that bustling street otherwise blighting their view…

Do you have dogs in your garden?

If so, then you are probably eager to avoid a situation that prompts you to ask “Who let the dogs out?” like a member of the Baha Men circa the year 2000. If those canines are relatively small or don’t jump, then a fence of three to four feet in height could suffice for keeping them secure.

To keep larger dogs secure, you will need taller fencing than this. Fortunately, as well as roof repair in Newcastle, we offer fencing measuring up to six foot tall.
