Perks of choosing a career in roofing

Last Updated: 9th March 2023

Are you mulling over your career options? Perhaps you’re about to leave secondary school, college or university, or have simply become despondent about your current job. Whatever the factors making you contemplate a big career move, maybe joining the roofing trade could be it.

At this point, you might be thinking: “Why?” Even if you have often utilised roofers’ services, you might remain unsure what their job entails. Well, here are just some reasons why we love it!

A roofing apprenticeship is better value than a degree

Many of us have heard tragic stories of people graduating from university after years of having fun there, only to be turned away from one job after another. Why? Often, it’s because their university education didn’t teach them enough of the practical skills they really needed for the workplace.

Fortunately, on a roofing apprenticeship like that available here at Vantage’s, you can not only learn such skills as they pertain to the roofing trade but also in less time than getting a degree would take.

You can enjoy relatively high job security

Think about it: a solid, protective roof isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have – for all of us. Therefore, there will always be demand for people who know how to build roofs to a high standard – and replace or repair them if issues arise.

You don’t have to settle for just being a “standard” roofer, either. One day, you could develop the confidence to set up your own roofing business – a very realistic and attainable ambition.

There’s a lot of variety to the job

As a roofer, you could be called upon to assemble scaffolding, determine which materials should be used for that next roof installation or repair job, and carry out roof inspections. Nonetheless, Career Alley warns that, when working, you must always be alert to keep yourself and nearby people safe. There’s a huge level of responsibility that a roofer must take seriously.

Roofing is a good way to keep physically fit

It’d be fair to say that not many jobs actually pay you to keep in shape – once you’ve ruled out hopelessly unobtainable jobs, like that of a professional athlete, anyway. However, with all of the climbing and heavy lifting roofers have to do, it’s hardly surprising that they have good stamina.

Therefore, life as a roofer could save you money on a gym membership – or, at least, ensure it’s not just the gym you rely on for tapping into many health benefits of staying fit.

Your roofing career could take you on many different paths

As the National Careers Service points out, your training in roofing doesn’t have to end with the apprenticeship. You could, for example, study for a qualification like the Level 3 (NVQ) Diploma in Roofing Occupations, or pursue training in specialist areas like thatching and heritage conservation.

You could even find yourself working for our own Durham roofing firm – whether you join us after your apprenticeship, working elsewhere or perhaps even benefitting from our roofing work!
