Installing solar panels is certainly not something we do on a whim. You probably have a huge array of questions to hand, so our roofers in the North East have put their heads together to try and answer some of your solar panel FAQs. Keep scrolling to find the answer to all of your solar panel query’s…
How much space do I need on my roof?
Generally speaking, an 8-panel solar PV system is one of the smallest that comes recommended, as anything small would struggle to produce a substantial amount of energy. This size would reasonably fit on the roof of an average 3-bed semi-detached house.
Do I need a south-facing roof?
It’s true that most homes in the northern hemisphere will perform better when their solar panels are facing true south. In fact, panels that face the southwest or southeast produce 8% less energy than panels facing the south, while panels that face east or west produce 20% less energy. Unfortunately, if the only suitable roof you have on your home faces the north, you’ll be out of solar luck.
How long is the installation?
Most domestic solar panels take no longer than a day to install, and disruption to your home is minimum. Scaffolding will typically be erected a couple of days before the installation. Then the solar PV team will arrive and mount the panels to the roof and install the inverter. Finally, they will carry out the internal wiring and your installation will be complete.
How long will my system last for?
Typically, a solar panel system will last between 25 and 30 years. The only moving part of the system is the inverter, and that should last for over 10 years, though it can cost up to £1,000 to replace, though you can sometimes buy an extended warranty for your inverter for a bit extra.
What maintenance will my system need?
Aside from the recommended check-up every 2 years, your shutters will need minimal maintenance. In terms of cleaning, most panels are self cleaning due to being placed at an angle of 15 degrees or more. However, we advise visually inspecting them regularly and rinsing if necessary.
How do I get the Smart Export Guarantee?
In order to benefit from the SEG, you will need to apply to the scheme. Under the scheme, all licensed energy companies are obligated to provide at least one SEG tariff, so once you’ve had your solar panels installed, you’ll need to reach out to your provider and ask to switch to the SEG tariff. It could be that you need to wait until the end of your contract before you can make the switch, in order to save yourself any transaction costs.
