Tips for making the most of your conservatory in the colder months

Last Updated: 9th March 2023

After you have poured a lot of your hard-earned money into the construction of a conservatory, you could easily be galled if that structure struggles to keep its heat for much of the year.

In practice, many conservatories are best reserved for summer use – but, with some careful tweaks, your conservatory could become surprisingly palatable to continue using even as the outside cools.

Improve your conservatory’s glazing

For insulating a home against heat leakage, glass simply doesn’t compare to a 300mm brick wall, TheGreenAge explains. Nonetheless, you can narrow that gap if you opt for a higher standard of glazing. If your conservatory is particularly old, it might still rely on single glazing.

Double or triple glazing, however, would be better – and available with a modern conservatory. We can build one for you at any home in the North East.

Block off all possible sources of draughts

Usually, when heat is lost from a conservatory, it is lost through the glazing. However, as draughts are another important factor, you could benefit from looking for where they are entering and then blocking them off – such as through checking that the door is wholly draught-proofed.

Warm up the floor

Heat tends to rise, a major reason why much your conservatory’s glass windows can be a strong culprit for heat leakage. However, some heat is prone to disappearing through the floor instead.

Given how often your feet will touch this floor, you can obviously be a good judge of how warm it is. If it actually feels cold, possible remedies could include a rug, carpet or thick underlay.

Switch on a heater… but only at select times

While adding a heater to your conservatory seems like an obvious solution to the problem of lingering frostiness, leaving that heater running unattended would be a false economy. Heat generated from a convection heater will rise vertically and so quickly disappear through the glass.

Therefore, to make the most of this electrically-produced heat, it would be better for you to wait until you are in the conservatory before you activate that heater.

Turn your conservatory into a home gym

Let’s assume that you have followed the tips in this article and mustered sufficient heat to make the conservatory comfortable for sustained periods of autumn or winter use.

If the conservatory has a lot of open space, you could add an exercise bike or a yoga mat. After all, with the weather outside likely to often draw you indoors, it would be a shame to give up an exercise regime that might have previously taken you out and about on a regular basis.

Invite friends around for a get-together

That conservatory could also now be a nice setting for, as the Independent suggests, a game of cards or simply a chat over coffee. However, a leak in a conservatory roof can especially evidence itself at this time of year – so, if it does, consider calling our roofers to Newcastle upon Tyne before your friends.
