What is a competent roofer?

Last Updated: 2nd September 2025

First of all, it doesn’t sound hard to find, does it? In some lines of work, you might seek someone who is ‘exceptional’ at what they do, or maybe ‘outstanding’. Perhaps you’d look for someone with specific qualifications or an impressive portfolio. Well, when it comes to roofing, a ‘competent roofer’ is all of the above and more.

Compliant, certified, covered

These are the three additional, guaranteed and essential Cs you’ll be getting when you use a registered ‘CompetentRoofer’ on your property. The CompetentRoofer accreditation is the Government-licensed Competent Person Scheme that allows professional roofing contractors to self-certify that the work they complete complies with Building Regulations in England and Wales.

Furthermore, unless you want to apply for building regulations yourself, a CompetentRoofer is what you will require if more than 50% of your roof requires replacing. In fact, not doing so may not only be considered in breach of these regulations – and the law – but could lead to problems in the future if you wish to sell your home.

Roofers are fully audited and inspected before they join the CompetentRoofer scheme, and are also regularly checked for adherence throughout their membership. This not only ensures that work is being carried out to the highest modern, professional standards, but allows homeowners to know that they are dealing with the most reliable, reputable companies around.

Security for you and your home

When replacing more than half of your roof, it is a legal requirement that you upgrade the insulation. Again, you would need a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate (BRCC) – which a Competent Roofer has the authority to issue – but not getting this certificate can be troublesome.

Failure to comply with required regulations could mean a visit from the Local Authority Building Control (LABC), who could decide that the rood does not meet the required criteria. This could mean further work or the complete removal of your roof – at a cost to you alone.

However, were you to instead use a registered CompetentRoofer from the beginning of the project, you would have the added insurance of a contractor’s workmanship guarantee. This means that, if the new roof fails and even if the company who worked for you have gone out of business, you will still be covered by a 10-year, insurance-backed guarantee.
