As you’ve probably noticed, the leaves are already starting to turn, and the trees are slowly deciding to let them loose for another year. While winter doesn’t officially start until the end of December, its chilly, moody predecessor autumn is certainly on the way. And while the slow fade of summer can often be a melancholic period, it’s a great time of year to see how your roof’s getting on above you.
It’s not just winter that takes its toll
The heat and humidity of summer can be just as challenging for your roof as the frost and hail of the winter months. If any cracks have appeared, or tiles have been damaged, then the traditionally wet autumn and cold winter to come can certainly take advantage of even the most innocuous of gaps in your roof covering. So sandwiched between the heat and cold, autumn is an ideal time to see if any damage has occurred over summer, and ensure it isn’t disastrously exacerbated in winter.
Autumn is fiendishly sunny
While midway through the season you’re practically guaranteed to be setting off to and from work in darkening skies, autumn remains deceptively mild and sunny, with 11 hours of sunlight in October and 10 in November the standard. Giving you, or preferably your trusted local roofing contractor (Hi!) plenty of time to give your roof a thorough seasonal inspection, you’ll be more likely to have reasonable weather on the day the ladders are placed against your home.
It’s a bad time for debris
While at the start of autumn it can be inspiring, if not a little sad, to see leaves turning from vibrant green to yellows, reds and browns, when they are falling in abundance they can become problematic. And this doesn’t just apply to under your feet, either. As the winds pick up, and the leaves blow away, there’s a greater chance of debris reaching and decomposing on your roof than at any other time of year. Again, any damage already present can present soggy leaves and moss with the ideal opportunity to cause damage in your property.
Repairs can be made in time
Along with the bonus of many more daytime hours than in winter, any longer-term repairs and full roof replacements will be far easier to manage before winter sets in. Any seals applied will have more time to set, the roofing team will have longer days and brighter days to complete the work, and there is little chance of weather becoming so extreme that no work can take place.
