Why TLX insulation is a good choice for the approaching colder months

Last Updated: 20th April 2023

As thermometer readings get lower and you start feeling more of a chill in the air, the implication is clear: it won’t be long before people start yearning to sing Christmas songs or, at least, buy presents for the festive season. However, won’t you increasingly find yourself shivering even in your home?

You might think that there’s an obvious remedy: simply turning the heating up. However, if you haven’t adequately insulated your loft or roof space, much of that warmth – and, hence, the money you pay for it – could end up going to waste. Therefore, prioritise sorting out your insulation first.

Why is roofing insulation so important?

The Energy Saving Trust claims that, without insulation, a home will lose a quarter of its heat through the roof. That’s a lot to needlessly fritter away at a time of year when every extra degree of warmth could make an easily appreciable difference.

Fortunately, by simply insulating the loft or roof space, you can reduce how much heat escapes and, thus, the financial outlay that would otherwise be necessary to make up the loss. Furthermore, once fitted, loft insulation can serve its purpose for at least four decades.

Not all insulation products are created equal

Before you rush to Google “how to insulate your roof”, keep in mind that certain methods of roofing insulation can certainly be more effective than others. While it’s possible to install such insulation in a DIY manner, there are various pitfalls which, in some cases, could rule out a DIY approach entirely.

You should be especially concerned if you have an older home that currently lacks a vapour barrier, like polythene or foil-backed plasterboard, in its roof. Even if that roof is actually insulated, the absence of a vapour barrier could see water vapour pass through to the insulation’s cold side and so cause condensation, as the TLX Insulation website warns.

Your household could produce water vapour in abundance when cooking Christmas food – and his vapour could remain in the air before reaching the insulation. Contrary to what is too often believed, simply making insulation breathable will not suffice for preventing condensation.

TLX insulation: a comprehensive solution

Earlier, we mentioned the brand that makes it, but what actually is TLX insulation? Our workers at Vantage’s have the expertise to install this insulation in two forms: TLX Gold and TLX Silver. The latter is reflective, multi-foil insulation that provides complete air and vapour barrier.

TLX Gold, meanwhile, is entirely breathable – right through to its patented shiny underside capable of reflecting heat. As this type of insulation also occupies the temperature gradient’s coldest part, it allows water vapour to escape before it can cool sufficiently to cause condensation.

Another plus point of TLX Gold is that our roofers in Middlesbrough, Durham, Hartlepool and right across the region can secure it into place without needing to alter the roof’s height significantly, if at all. TLX insulation is suited to applications ranging from historic buildings to new builds and extensions.
