Why your bathroom needs to be especially well-insulated

Last Updated: 9th March 2023

If you think about it, there are an awful lot of things you do in your bathroom. You shower or bathe yourself there, brush your teeth, use the toilet… and what do all of those things involve? Yes, that’s right: water. Alas, this is why problems can’t emerge if your insulation isn’t up to scratch.

“Insulation? Do I really need to think about that in my bathroom?” Yes, you do – but you could have been easily excused for not realising. Here’s a rundown of how surprisingly perilous it is not to do so.

Water, water, everywhere

Yes, there’s certainly plenty of water in your bathroom at any given time. It’s running from your bath’s tap or showerhead when you are preparing to wash. It’s in your toilet, where it gets refreshed whenever you use the flush. It’s even on a toothbrush that you wash clean of toothpaste.

However, such activities can produce water vapour that is invisible to you until deposited in tiny drops on particularly cold surfaces of your home. That home has probably got more than a few of those surfaces, given the time of year – think walls, windows, ceilings and mirrors.

Those tiny drops are known as condensation, explains Gateshead Council, which runs one of the areas outside Yorkshire where we operate. Basically, the more water vapour you generate in a space, the higher risk you run of causing condensation.

You need to stay warm in your bathroom

Given that your bathroom is a space where you are often undressing or naked, probably the last thing you’ve thought about is leaving it chilly. However, keeping shivering at bay is hardly the only reason for you to keep your bathroom comfortably warm.

That’s because your home’s temperature is another factor behind how much condensation it creates. Indeed, the lower that temperature, the more the air can struggle to hold moisture, cautions Mother Nature Network.

Why is condensation such a big deal anyway?

Simple: it can give rise to mould growth. As water soaks into wallpaper, paintwork or plasterwork in your home, mould can form. Your bathroom is especially vulnerable to this effect. As Better Homes & Gardens warns: “Few rooms in the home see as much moisture and humidity as the bathroom.”

Mould is nasty, at least in the home. Outside it, mould can help in destroying organic materials like leaves and so enriching the soil. Inside the home, though, mould can trigger respiratory issues, sinus congestion and headaches, not to mention irritate the eyes, nose and throat.

Insulation is a convenient solution

You can better insulate your bathroom through, say, having a new window – in a more insulating, uPVC material – fitted. We can install that window for you in Yorkshire.

If your bathroom is part of a loft conversion, getting TLX insulation fitted there can also help – especially as the space could be responsible for a quarter of your home’s heat loss. Our roofing company in Yorkshire awaits your call on 01423 275 100.
